Dear Families and Friends of St. Francis Xavier Parish,

“Never let evil talk pass your lips; say only the good things men need to hear, things that will really help them. Do nothing that will sadden the Holy Spirit with whom you were sealed against the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, all passion and anger, harsh words, slander, and malice of every kind. In place of these, be kind to one another, compassionate, and mutually forgiving, just as God has forgiven you in Christ” (Eph. 4:29-32).

This scripture is not from this weekend’s readings. Rather, it is taken from the introduction to one of the best resources from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), called, “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.” It doesn’t tell you about political candidates or party platforms. Rather, it is a booklet to help Catholics better understand our own Catholic Social Teaching (CST), which is the area of theology that has to do with government, society, justice, human dignity and rights, in terms of Sacred Scripture and Church Teaching. In other words, it helps to inform--to properly form--our consciences about the principles by which we remain faithful to the gospel while contributing to the political and social process.

This does not mean advocating for a theocracy or blurring the lines between church and state. Many of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching can be arrived at by the light of natural reason. However, because of the darkening of the intellect by sin, vice, and our fallen nature, it is difficult to navigate these matters unaided by assistance from above. Christ is the Truth, the Way, and the Life. The Father is the source of all that is true, good, and beautiful. By divine light, we can be of aid to society by pointing out the right way, the truth that sets humanity free from sin.

In the following weeks, we will be walking through this booklet together. It might be difficult to humbly accept and follow some of the Church teachings. It will not match up with any political platform. There are principles for weighing priorities with the political options available. Let us pray for our nation, for our world, for truth, for peace, for liberty and justice for all.

No habla de candidatos políticos ni de plataformas partidistas. Más bien, es un folleto para ayudar a los católicos a comprender mejor nuestra propia Enseñanza Social Católica (CST), que es el área de la teología que tiene que ver con el gobierno, la sociedad, la justicia, la dignidad y los derechos humanos, en términos de la Sagrada Escritura y la Enseñanza de la Iglesia. . En otras palabras, ayuda a informar (a formar adecuadamente) nuestra conciencia sobre los principios mediante los cuales permanecemos fieles al evangelio mientras contribuimos al proceso político y social.

Esto no significa abogar por una teocracia o desdibujar las líneas entre Iglesia y Estado. Se puede llegar a muchos de los principios de la Enseñanza Social Católica a la luz de la razón natural.
